“Clockwork & Chivalry” – a brand new roleplaying game set during the English Civil War, although not the one you’ll have read about in your history books…

“I’m a big fan of alternate history and also of twisted histories so when I was first sent Clockwork & Chivalry the premise immediately appealed to me. After reading through the draft, and the associated proposal, things moved very quickly from there.” Said Cubicle 7’s Angus Abranson.

“We are thrilled to be working with such an exciting publishing partner. It’s great to see our game alongside the other cool RPGs that Cubicle 7 produces…” said Peter Cakebread of Cakebread and Walton

Clockwork and Chivalry

The kingdom has been torn asunder. On one side, Puritans in their Leviathans, great machines of metal and wood, powered by the righteous power of clockwork, churn through the mud of the battlefields, their mighty cannons drowning out the hymn-singing of the Elect within; on the other side, Prince Rupert, premier Battle Alchemist of the age, summons elementals and calls down storms from heaven, leading his Cavaliers in a desperate struggle, despite the death of King Charles at the hands of his enemies.

And between the feet of these wrestling titans, the ordinary people of England struggle to get by, split into a myriad religious and political factions, their faith undermined, their aspirations raised by the overthrow of the old order and the promise of a new world to come…

Clockwork & Chivalry is a role-playing game set in a 17th Century England that never was; a world of war, of mad machines and mighty magic, of mud and blood and hope and death, of righteousness and revolution. Tuck your flintlocks in your belt and your slide-rule in your hat-band; the King is dead, long live the Mainspring!

Clockwork & Chivalry is an alternate take on the era of the English Civil War; the various religious and political factions of the time provide for a complex and detailed adventure setting. The addition of Clockwork and Magick provides the twist. In Clockwork & Chivalry both sides are reeling from the destruction that these new technologies have wrought on the battlefield. The rising efficiency of the Machine Age meets the last flowering of the Age of Chivalry.

The game is powered by Mongoose Publishing’s RuneQuest II system, which lends itself to the gritty and heroic atmosphere of the game. Rules have been developed which reflect the Adventurers’ fervour for their chosen faction – how Righteous they are in their beliefs. Righteousness and good role-playing are the key to swaying people to your cause, or preventing you from losing your own convictions.

Clockwork & Chivalry will be fully supported with a variety of regular supplements which will develop and expand the setting. The first supplement, The Alchemist’s Wife, will be an adventure campaign taking the Adventurers from the Alchemical laboratories of the Royalist capital of Oxford to the Clockwork weapon-shops of Parliamentarian Cambridge.

  • Explore the Seventeenth Century, a neglected time period full of rich role-playing opportunity.
  • Adventure in the “World Turned Upside Down”, a time of change and struggle.
  • Side with Cavaliers, Roundheads, or neither, in the English Civil War.
  • Choose a background for your Adventurer from a large variety of Professions and Factions.
  • Wield mighty Alchemical Magicks or utilise Clockwork technology.
  • How Righteous are you? Will your beliefs land you in hot water or carry you through the turmoil?
  • A campaign sourcebook for Mongoose Publishing’s popular RuneQuest II rules (requires the RuneQuest II Core Rulebook to play).
